Day 17 - Niagara-on-the-Lake

On Sunday, June15th, we went to Niagara-on-the-Lake, an attractive little town which, as its name implies, is on the south side of Lake Ontario, at the 'corner' where the Niagara River flows into the lake.

Our first stop was at the 'Irish Harp' pub where we had lunch. The interior furnishings of the pub were actually shipped across from Ireland, and so it had a real Irish ambience...

... including two musicians playing Irish tunes.
They even promise to look after husbands!

From there it was a short walk towards the Prince of Wales Hotel. Dating from the 1860s, it had several names before receiving its present name in honour of the Prince of Wales (later George V) who visited the hotel in 1901.

The main street in the town is lined with small shops, selling antiques, clothes, jewellery, speciality food etc.

In the Scottish shop, there were a lot of British items, especially food!

In the middle of the street is the War Memorial and clock tower, which has appeared in several different movies.

'The Dead Zone' starring Christopher Walken and Martin Sheen was filmed in the town in the 1980s, and the gazebo overlooking the lake was built especially for this film. It was then donated to the town.

At the far end of the park which lines the lake, you can get a good view of Toronto on the northern side, about 35 miles away. If you look closely you can even make out the CN Tower.

  2. I could easily spend a day here. I'd like to take a boat across to Toronto from there. Note to self...
